    Transmission noise

I have suddenly found a growling sound in the transmission of the 1960 TR3A.  Only in reverse and first gears.  More pronounced in reverse.  Any suggestion as to what should I look for?  I have removed the shifter  and see no obvious damage inside.  I am in the proccess of straining the drained oil through a coffee filter to see if any metal is present.  As always, any help is appreciated.

A long pencil magnet works great !

Did you ever find out the problem?  Was it..... bearings?   On the Tr4a there is a shaft with double  bearings that  has twice  failed for me.

    Thanks for asking.

The problem was a tooth broken from the 1st Speed Countershaft Gear.  So I replaced it and while inside did the bearings, synchro sleeves, seals, clutch & pressure plate, 1st gear, reverse gear, etc, etc, etc.

I keep telling myself if these things were easy, anybody could do it.

If you mean  item 60 in  the Moss gearbox parts catalog ( 841- 010) , I believe it is the equivalent of item 54  ( 840-500  or 840-505 ) in the same catalog for the Tr4a... which I also had replaced .  Yours was  gear tooth probem , mine was  bearing  failures.
    Thanks for your response.
