Detail about MGTF running board to front fender joint

    All,

    HELP!

I have a detailed question about the orientation of the joint between the front of the running board and the back edge of the fender on a MGTF.

Some pictures I have show the joint perpendicular to the ground and some show the joint perpendicular to the back edge of the fender.  My running board has the joint perpendicular to the ground and the fenders I acquired have the joint perpendicular to the fender.  This leaves a "pie" shaped wedge when I try to join them.  I prefer to have the joint perpendicular to the fender so that the rubber will align better, but want to know if there is a known "correct" way that fits a late 53 or early 54 car.

If it is no or little difference, then I will weld up the fender rather than the running board!  But if there is a really "right"way, then I will do that.

     Thanks,

    John from KC

    John,

I suspect there is something wrong with the way you have hung the fender or the running board.  The two parts should simple bolt together with out the need for any welding. I could e-mail a photo directly to your e-mail address if you wish. Sorry but don’t find posting to this forum that easy

Re: Detail about MGTF running board to front fender joint

From my limited experience restoring a '51 TD, I'd note that factory and aftermarket replacement fenders over the years seem to have lots of minor variations in fit and detail.  My left and right rear fenders have differently shaped ridge lines, and the right tail light opening is 3/4" lower than the left side.  Both my running boards are not quite mirror-image identical.  So, if your rubber gap sealer does indeed cover the gap, that's about as good as the factory made it!  No need to weld things together, anyway.

Very different production standards back then ...

    Thanks Dick,

I totally agree! The body panels are not fitting together partly due to their shape and not so much that the ends are not square.  I am reevaluating and find that the overall curve of the two parts is not enough to allow the fender-running board to bolt on correctly.  When I bolt the fender on the car with the running board attached, the running board misses the back fender by 6 inches too low.  I will have to carefully increase the curve on the running board (or maybe the back of  the fender) so it is facing up a little more in the front..   I will do some measuring on it before!  And, I plan to use the door bottom and the old paint line as a guide.
