    HELP?!? Wiring etc.

    Hi everyone,

I've been restoring my TR3B for quite a while now and I finished installing a new wiring harness into the car. I've followed the wiring chart in the Hayne's Manual as well as the red TR3 Manual. I have a neg-ground setup. My main problem is that whenever I put a fuse into the lighting switch (headlights) and turn it on, there are sparks and the fuse blows. I've used a 25amp as well as a 30amp fuse. I've just come back from rechecking all the connections and it's just not working. Any ideas? Oh yeah and my red ignition indicator light isn't working either...

Additionally, does anyone know where the Speedometer cable attaches in the engine compartement. I've found the rpm connector but cannot find the speedo...

Thanks for your help and have a great upcoming weekend.

Sounds to me like you have one of the “hot” wires connected to one of the grounds in the lighting system. If you disconnect the tail lights do you still blow the fuse?

Do you have a multimeter and do you know how to use it? Answering this question will shape future troubleshooting tips.

MG has it right. You have a hot lead crossed with a ground...somewhere! Try this, disconnect ALL your lights and turn on the switch. If the fuse blows, the problem is at your switch. If the fuse doesn't blow, reconnect the lights, one at a time. When the fuse blows, you've found the faulty circuit.

Since you've replaced the harness, it is more than possible that while routing it through the car, you've sliced through the insulation somewhere and that wire may be in contact with the chassis. When you energize that wire, boom, there goes the fuse!

Let us know what you find by doing this.
