To improve this Forum reduce the categories in each car type

I occassionaly come to this forum for a bit of a read. But i do find there are too many individual categories (not threads) in each car type.

I'm into MGAs. But the number of categories for the  MGA is 29!!!  Thats a lot of folders to look into to see if there is anything interesting to read or help to find. Very few responses and some havent been touched for years.

With less categories maybe more posts will be read and more topics will be discussed and solutions found.

Why? Because i may not have a Fuel system issue so i wont go there. But it doesnt help the guy who does have a problem. If this topic was listed under "Mechanical" there maybe a dozen topics to read and offer help on.

Then suddenly this forum will start buzzing with visitors and residents.

ONE MORE POINT.  On your home page you should have the link to the forum really HUGE so it activly invites people to have a look and want to return.

    Thanks for listening

While we are at making suggestions for improving something that is absolutely FREE, it would be nice if we could up-load photos directly to the thread.  Don’t know how it’s done, but it is possible on the Owner’s Club BBS.

MGADavid: You can. The key is that you pic must be hosted online somewhere. You can add pictures to your Gallery here from your computer if you don't have another website where you host the pics already. When you reply here, click on the icon that looks like a picture of a tree (two to the left of the smiey face icon). A new window will pop up and you can enter the web address where the picture is hosted. That will embed your pic in your reply.

Re: To improve this Forum reduce the categories in each car type

davidmga1600: Thank you so much for the great suggestions. I'm not privy to why we chose this Forum set-up when we did, but it was chosen. It isn't the best, IMO. Hopefully someday we can change it to something more useful. As for the link on our homepage - we're in the process of completely redoing our web platform. New site design, new functionality - the works. When that is launched (we expect April 2010) hopefully our Forum will have a larger, louder, presence.

As for your note that there are 29 categories for MGA, I'm confused! We actually only have 4 categories where regular members (not Administrators) can post and have conversations; General, Mechanical, Performance and MGA Garage. Tech Tips and CarMart are off-limits for conversations - Administrators post there so information is available to the public. Still, that's only 6 categories to my count. Would you mind giving me some more information about what you're seeing and what's troubling to you? For example, I monitor this Forum and check it everyday. If I see under the category section that there was a new post from the last time I visited (the subject shows up in Bold) I click on the category to see what folks are posting about. If nothing is Bold, I know nothing new has been posted and I move on.

Regardless - What's most important to us at Moss is that you all use this Forum and enjoy doing so. I will forward a link to this thread to all the appropriate Managers here so they're aware of your concerns and requests. And again, I thank you for taking the time to post to let us know what you're thinking!

    Christine,

Your reply has explained why there are so many un-used categories. I didn't know that you could not post to the tech tips topics.

    Ok.

But still you way want to have a look at ways to streamline the system to reduce the number of categories i have to look into.

    Thanks.

Re: To improve this Forum reduce the categories in each car type

One thing you might want to try if you haven't already, is to click on the link on the upper right, under Shortcuts, "Posts you have not read". That might help? (Although that brings up all threads, not just MGA. On second thought...)

And please know you're "preaching to the choir" about our Forum design! As soon as we get clearance to re-do it and make it RIGHT we will.

    Thanks!
