    Metropolitan engine color

Hopefully someone out there can help me with this. Myself and a few others have Metropolitans (British made imported to the USA for Nash) with red engines. mine is a 1500cc. the common engine color is green. It is my understanding that while building, the makers used the MGA engine at times. Does anyone know if the Met's red engine color is the same color as the red MGA color. or when and why did the company use the red color and the MGA engine, and is there a color code for the red paint? This is an on going question in our Met clubs and we really need to have this answered. I am hoping that I can contact someone that actually worked on these little cars.

    Thanks

    Mort:

I've only seen the green color on Metro engines so far, but it is feasible that an MG Magnette engine could have snuck into the production line if there was a shortage as it had similar specifications. I doubt if an MGA engine would have been used originally, as the MGA engine did not have provision for a mechanical fuel pump, and had a tach drive take off which would be an expensive extra.

The original primer and interior color of the blocks was reddish, so this may also be what you are seeing.

Just as a counterpoint. I have seen MGB blocks that had originally been painted Austin Green, probably from the Austin 1800 program.

The original olive green color was also used on the earlier Sprites and Midgets and is available in spray cans under Moss # 220-580. The MG red engine paint is #220-540.

    Hope this helps

    Re: Metropolitan engine color

Kevin thanks for replying. So far from what I've seen myself and my friends that have the red engines all have 57 models which are the1500cc engines. Don't know if that has anything to do with the color or not. WE have gotten into some heated discussions about the proper engine color. I may bite for a can of the red paint to see if it matches.

    Thanks

    Re: Metropolitan engine color

    Mort,

I may have responded to you a couple years ago in a different discussion group, but I also have a '57 (actually built in May, '56) and my engine is in original trim and is painted a dark red.  It's hard to say what color the cylinder head is, but the valve cover is green.  Quite a combination!
