    Falls flat on its face...

I've inherited my sisters abonded 71 MGB. I've got the little guy running and it will idle all day. Not long ago I rebuilt the brakes and got to take it for a test drive. Man it is fun to scoot around in it, but after driving for around ten miles or five to ten minutes the car falls flat on its face and doesn't want to run. If i let it sit and cool it will run, or I can keep it in gear and limp it home. The fuel pump was replaced before the vehicle was driven, and I've cleaned and checked many wire and ground connections. Unfortunately I am slightly unfamiliar with points and condensor style ignitions, so I'm assuming the problem may be there. I was really hoping that maybe someone here may be familiar with an issue like this and have some insite to what may be holding me back from enjoying this awesome little car.

    Thanks

Check the primary wire to the coil—make sure it’s tight. If so, is the coil hot when the car conks-out? If the coil is hot—you need to replace it.

Thanks for the quick response. I've checked wire and ground connections, but will definately double check (hopefully that easy of a fix.) I've never checked the coil after problem occurs, so I now have an excuse to hide out in the garage later. I've got new coil and condensor on the way, but I'm itching to check.

Make sure that the heat shield is in place behind the carburetors(s). With the carburetors(s) being installed just above the exhaust manifold, the heat will cause problems without that heat shield in place.

Re: Falls flat on its face...

Find the fuel line that delivers fuel from the fuel pump to the carburetters under the hood. Now get a coffee can and a screwdriver that will fit that line. Also bring a length of the same diameter hose with you. Go for a ride, When the problem starts, disconnect the line and attatch the tubing you've brought, to the delivery line from the rear of the car.. Now turn on the ignition and see what kind of flow you've got. I have a suspicion that the fuel tank is serving up loads of crud and starving you out. A new tank may be in order. The clue is when you said the car was "abandoned". How long has it been sitting? The fuel tanks go bad pretty quickly on Bs
