    Timing Spockets 1971 TR6

I was wondering if anyone out there had and idea on crank and camshaft line up. I had purchased a new set

from Moss motors and the new spockets have no line up marks ? The old spockets have been in the

trash for several years. I cannot beleive they make these without line up marks. When I contacted them, the

best they could do is send a picture ( out of book I allready have). Help !

    Mike-

I don't own a TR-6 but is it possible that having the keyways in the twelve o'clock position lines everything up or that the marks are in the end of the cam and crankshaft? Does that make sense when you look at the picture that was sent?

I'm sure someone else will come up with the definitive answer.

If the cam is stock follow the installation instructions in the repair op manual.  If it is not you will need the degree installation figure for that specific cam. The cam wheel is almost infinitely variable.

The part number of the stock cam is probably  307621 or 311399 (post 73) and will be stamped in it. (for Carb engines)

    There are two methods used.

1   The more accurate is by setting the cam to Fully open on No 1 inlet and setting the crank to the known degree after TDC for that cam. (the installation figure)

2   For stock cams only - Set the crank to TDC Nos 1 and 4 and lock in place.  (with all tappets in and two push rods and the No 6 cylinder and head plus rocker gear in place - set the rocker clearance to 0.050" on valves 11 & 12.  Rotate the cam so the inlet & exhaust lobes on No 6 are "on the rock" You can then check the tappet clearance on 11&12 are equal as the cam is rotated to and fro.  This means they are both equally open & closed and the crank is set to TDC.

Once the cam and the crank are in the right positions offer up the cam wheel with chain in different ways until the bolts go in.  Once the bolts are in and the timing has been double checked, mark gears and finish the installation. Worth checking the timing of the cam using both installation methods.

You will need need a cam timing disc and a dial indicator to confirm the crank TDC and cam fully open position.

Read this article/thread from TR Register, it hits all your problems...

The Kastner tuning publication for TR250/6 should also have some useful guides on installing cams. ( I only have TR4 book which is not relevant)

Ask Moss to send you a PDF of the installation instructions from the Rep Op manual or the Kastner book.

PS  I have just done the timing calculation for the known STOCK Carb Cams and I came up with 110 degrees as the installation figure. That is, with No 1 inlet valve fully open, the crank should be at 110 degrees  (ATDC) after top dead centre.

BE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS.
