    Gearbox oil

    Gentlemen;

    I am concerned that I may be damaging my gearbox by using the wrong oil.  My MG-T shop manual recommends 90 wt gear oil.  I am currently using 80W-90 gear oil which I get from the local auto parts store.  However, I think I remember reading articles which stated that the oil I’m now using is not what was intended when the manual was written.  I have also heard that today’s modern oil contains a high sulfur content which is bad for the softer metal parts in the gearbox.  My gearbox gets very hot after 30 minutes or so of driving, making the shifter handle very hot to the touch.  And, finaly, does ZDDP enter into the gearbox oil thinking?  I also use this same 80W-90 in my differential.  Am I making a mistake?  What do you all use?

    Thanks for any help,

    Dick

    Re: Gearbox oil

    Dick, you may want to check out "Sta-Lube" 85w90 GL-4 from NAPA. If it's not in the store they can get it. Part # SL24239. It states that it is "Not corrosive to copper, bronze or other non-ferrous alloy bearings and bushings".  There is a pump that screws onto the jug, too. Part # SL4344.

    Thanks, I'll check that out.  Until recently, I had just not thought about th soft metal parts.  The pump would be a big help!

    Thanks,

    Dick
