    QUADOPTIC HEADLIGHT HEADLAMP KIT

ok, I have a 64 mini cooper. I just put in an alt.  and I just purchased these QUADOPTIC HEADLIGHT HEADLAMP KIT today. Now I was just thinking. Do I need to install a relay kit?  No one at Moss or Mini Mania said anything about needing this nor did I think to ask. can someone fill me in. I think I purchased the 45 am alt.  I have piaa driving lamps installed on the car now.

    thanks

    Re: QUADOPTIC HEADLIGHT HEADLAMP KIT

I'm not familiar with the "Quadoptic" specifically, but the general answer to the relay question is, maybe.

The relay contacts are designed to handle more current than the the smaller, weaker contacts generally found in switches. Switches are designed with ergonomics and style in mind, while relays are designed to do a job.

If the current draw of the new headlights is the same as the originals, then you probably don't need the relay. If the lights draw more current, then you will want the relay in there even though it will still be possible to run the lights on the switch alone. The switch will be able to pass a higher current than what it is rated for, but this reduces the life-span of the contacts; Plus, it's generally easier to change a relay than a switch in the future!

I'd probably use the relay whether it's needed or not.

It is a good idea to run with the relay kit! The Wipac headlamp kit (QUADOPTIC) does draw a little more current than the standard sealed unit...as you car is a 64 the wiring will be quite brittle unless it's been treated to a new loom at some point so my personal choice would be to run the lamps through a relay it's a much safer option.

I have been in conversation with Taffy on this one and he confirms the HID conversion offered by Moss Europe in the UK are for H4 headlamp bulb replacement. So buy 'em and fit 'em in your Quadoptics.

    see http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=15729&SortOrder=1

This means you can compete with the irritating moron in the EuroBox which has exceptionally white/bright headlamps.

PS How come  this product missed the latest TR2/3/4 catalogue?
