    Horn only works w/lights on

My 71 mgb has developed a problem after a wire from the interior map light popped off. I replaced the entire unit. Anyway, after hooking up all the wires the way they were, checking fuses, connections, etc I find now that the horn will only work when the headlight switch is in the on position as well as the map light. Turn off the headlights and both stop working. I have looked at all the schematics and see that the headlight switch  and the horn and map light are all on the same fuse. Is it possible there's a problem with the headlight switch?

Also up under the dash behind the radio there is a green spade wire that I have no idea where it goes. Any ideas? Tried posting a picture but don't have permission.

    Any info appreciated,

    cheers,

    john

Sure sounds like you must have switched a wire or two somewhere. There could be several green wires but none of them are related to the headlights or horn. There really is no relation of the lights to the horn other than that common fuse. I cant' see how the headlight switch could have that effect on the horn if all is wired properly.

Re: Horn only works w/lights on

I only mucked around with the 3 wires from the map light. The original wires are purple, black, and purple/white. The new map light has black, brown, and brown/white. so I assume the solid purple car wire goes to the solid brown of the new map light. reversing the wires makes things smoke, so it has to be correct. Anyway, I have a couple of books arriving this week and hopefully I can get this problem solved.

Fixed it. Embarassed to say it was something simple. Took apart the horn button at the steering wheel and cleaned all the contacts, adjusted the 3 screws that depress the horn and it works without the lights being on. Didn't think to do all that since everything was working and initially only replaced the interior map light.

Good that it's now working and that it was an easy fix.

I celebrated too early. The horn is back to not working unless the light switch is on. Jiggled all the wires, checked all the fuses and the fuse box, cleaned the contacts. I just don't understand what's going on. Was working and now its not. Weird.
