clunking noise when accelerating or getting off the gas

Any ideas on what would cause my MG B(79) to make this noise .I can also feel the shift knob move slightly  in unison with the noise .Motor mount? trans mount/

    Any help will be appreciated.

Yes to the above. Could also be any looseness or wear anywhere in the drive line or rear suspension. If it does it in all gears then you can probably rule out the gearbox but anything else is suspect. Probably the most likely is a U-joint though. I'd start there anyway.

A u-joint is indeed a good posibility, but it may also be a fairly common problem with MGBs especially the later cars. The problem may be looseness in the spider gear assembly due to worn thrust washers. It's not a difficult fix, covered pretty well on the Chicago Land MG Club site. http://www.chicagolandmgclub.com/photos/b_clunk/
