    TD Cooling system

53 TD stayed in limbo for a while (2 years+), finally installed new water pump in April, 09. Temp Gauge not working: Anyone know where to find a new capillary tube?

This is the dual gauge Temp/Water.  Either Tube or gauge - suggestions welcome. And with less than 60 miles on the "new" water pump the pulley has come loose. Have to pull it off to determine if its the keyway or did the nut back off ? I installed a "B" 7 blade fan back in April and "Gidget" is running cool - When the gauge did not work I install a Thermometer on a spare radiator cap, works well. Running without thermostat also these days.  Appreciate feedback. JP

    JP,

The capillary tube is filled with a special gas. You will need, unless you are inventive/skilled to send the gauge away to an instrument rebuilder such as those named in the Moss catalog to have a new tube correctly installed.

    Re: TD Cooling system

Replace the original castle nut that retains the water pump pulley with the "nyloc" version, now sold by Moss (TD catalog, page 10, item #8).  Tighten it down until the pulley is firmly seated on the pump shaft.  I also didn't get my pulley nut tightened enough on an earlier rebuild, and it did start to wobble over time.  The nyloc, properly tightened, has solved it.

Removing the thermostat sounds like a good idea for increased flow, but some say the coolant actually needs to slow down in the cylinder head to absorb more heat before returning to the radiator.  The sole purpose of the thermostat is to allow the engine to warm up to it's design operating temperature quickly.  Once it's open, it has no further effect on the cooling capacity of the system.

The thermostat by-pass loop, without the old-style thermostat sleeve installed, will allow hot coolant to "short-circuit" the radiator, returning hot coolant to the water pump and block.  If you've pulled the sleeve, also block that bypass hose - a 3/4" PVC line plug will fit the hose interior nicely.

I had John Wolf & Co, (http://www.antiqueinstrument.com) rebuild the temp. gauge on my TF. It is working "great" for over two years now.
