momentary loss of power?

    momentary loss of power?

My  1977 B has an occasional, momentary loss of power/hesitation.  It happens when I am cruising at anywhere from 45MPH up.  Not when I'm accelerating, just when I'm running at a steady spead.  When I say momentary I'm talking 1/2 a second to 1 1/2 seconds.  It seems like there is a brief bit of a lack of fuel.

I've recently rebuilt the Zenith Stromburg carb, but I seem to remember it doing this last summer before I rebuilt the carb also.  The gas in my tank if about 1/2 6 months old and 1/2 brand new.

Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

     Thanks,

    Derrick

    Re: momentary loss of power?

Interesting, such a momentary cut at steady speed would have me looking at the ignition.

Last year, I had a faulty coil - there was a bad contact on the 12v circuit inside the can, and this produced a similar hesitation. Check all the connections from the supply throught the system, also the earthing wire inside the distributor (if you are still using points ignition). It sounds like it could be a faulty connection somewhere.

    Good call Ed...

It could also be a sticky valve. I've been there!

    Re: momentary loss of power?

How would I check for a sticky valve?  And is a sticking valave something I can live with for a while?  My MG gets pretty limited use, maybe 200 miles a month.  My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant so my toy budget has be reallocated to our baby toy budget...

I'll start with the electrical side of things, I have had to recently clean several coroded connections that were giving me electrical probs so hopefully that will take care of things!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll post back with the (hopefully successful) outcome.

Runs good under acceleration but some skipping under light load? I'd also check the timing, particularly the vaccum unit. It wouldn't hurt to check the fuel mixture and float levels too.

It is very intermitant.  It might happen once or twice in a 15 min. long drive.  The float and mixture shold be good.  You never know if I might have messed up the carb rebuild though....

The vacuum gauge is a good diagnostic tool for checking for a stuck valve among other things.

Another thing that gets overlooked is the fuse panel. Glass fuses can look good and go bad at the base to filament connection. A cheap fix, pull the fuses clean the holder conections tighten the "clips, and install new fuses. You never know it could be that simple good luck
