Datsun engine?

     I honestly doubt your going to discover anything new by modifiing a 40 year old car.

     I have an original Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol, does that mean since I own it I should burn it if I wish?

     I'm sure a Datsun drivetrain isn't the end of the world but haven't we all seen the nice little British car that some clown owns with a big stereo in it, glittery paint and Kragen seats and .........

     I bought a Mini that a kid bought on a whim with druggy stickers all over it and he was using it to tear around in the fields with. Thanks God I saved it.

     I'm just kinda sensitive to mods. I don't mean to make anyone angry.

     If you stay with the BMC motor you really have to find a 1275. Honestly they are quite easy to find because they are usually in a "static" position when you come across them.

     A fresh 1275 with maybe just a cam and a header, head shaved a bit would really wake your little car up.

    I'm not trying to raise any hackles either. You may honestly doubt someone is going to discover anything by modifying a 40 year old car, but I think that's for the person doing the modifying to decide. Perhaps what they'll discover is the limits of their abilities or the joy of creativity and innovation.

    As far as what you do with your own property, including valuable artwork, as long as you harm no one else, you should do just as you please. Of course, that doesn't mean it would be smart or prudent, but the point is, it's yours, not mine or anyone else's.

    I've seen cars and many other objects modified almost beyond recognition, and certainly not to my taste, but taste is subjective, and once again, as long as nobody is harmed...

    I won't say I like it when people take precious old machinery and do a lousy, unprofessional job of messing with it, But then again, I've been to some hot rod shows lately wherein each and every car has been modified totally, and some beautifully. I admire good, neat, thoughtful work wherever it is done.

    Lately, I've been teasing the idea of heavily modifying an MGA to run on the Salt Flats. I think I can establish a record, and I would love to do it. I have an old derelict chassis I saved from the scrap heap which I have begun modifying for this purpose. Beyond being regarded as generally insane, should I be considered a heretic for this?

    I guess I'm saying that opinions are fine, but we should all try to sound just a little less judgemental in expressing them.

    That makes far more sense than anything else.  There are several friends and club members that will have a 1275 or know where one is located.

    My 1098 has an APT mild performance cam, and dual valve springs.   Do you know if these parts interchangable with the 1275?

    A leader always rises to the top in any organization, and I'm overjoyed that this forum has you to rely on for the answers and leadership that you show.  It's much appreciated!

    Taking an MGA to Bonneville?  Sounds like a great idea to me, especially for a derelict chassis.  Please keep us informed on progress!  Makes far more sense than the insanity of a Suziki powered lawn mower that I saw at a car show this past weekend.  That thing turns 144 mph in the quarter!  He's taking it to Bonneville next month to go after the 150 mph record for lawn mowers!!!  Different strokes for different folks!  H'mmm, wonder if lawn mowers should be kept stock?  Sorry, couldn't resist that!

    Vintage View : FYI:

    Responding well into this thread, but just tripped accross it.

    After messing with several configurations in my '62 MKII (948, 1098, 1275), I converted to an A-14 with the mated 5 speed over 10 years ago, with plenty of trouble free power and zero mechanical issues while clocking approx. 20k miles.

    Justified doing so by fianlly coming to the realization that a square bodied Sprite is never going to be super - valued and driving the car is much more fun than working on it.  Besides, I pass most original motored cars like they are tied to trees. 

    Best upgrade I've made....

    Any advise on installation and finding an engine (short of the local junk yard) would be much appreciated, as would photos!  Be glad to send you my e-mail address if needed.

    Apparently, the engine fits without hood modifications, and my guess is that it's lighter than the original.

    Also curious as to what you used for dash gauges.

    Definitely agree about the cars projected value, and I definitely want to get it on the road!

    That's great!~ I always like it when my SPONSORS show up at my events.

    I sent for the rulebook on Friday, so I guess that's it...I'm certifiable...

    By the way, is there anybody out there who'd be dissappointed if it was an MGB instead of an A? Bs are easier to mess with, and (no disrespect intended) not as precious$...and I've got one sitting beside the shop waiting for a purpose in life.(no title)

    I wouldn't! Though, I think you'd be better off with the more streamlined MGA. There's a number of companies in the US that sell 'glass body panels for your 'A, as well. Believe I saw one, in my perusings for Midget stuff, for a one-piece front end.

    It's cold, damp, dark, and drafty with the top up and headlights on... British motoring at its best!

    Motorbill66 Love the Idea of a MGB idea. Make like the old EK179. Small bubble canopy etc. Got a idea. 3.2 SHO motor convert to rearwheel drive. High reving engine. Put a turbo on it, and say megasquit to tune. As far as differant motor in a Midget. Midgets are not rare or extremely valuable. So why not, but do nice job. Doing a 2.3 Ford turbo in a MGB. 400+HP doable fairly easy on them also. Not going for that much. Seem like to me alot of British car are running non-British motor. Also please keep us informed, Would love to be in a position to even think of doing this. Go for it. On the subject of trans. With rarety of the Datsun trans. I would think Rivergate would be looking into a differant more modern trans. This could only help there sales. No telling how many are wanting to do this but can't because of rarety of trans. My 2cents worth.

    Vintage View-

    This is a couple of years late (just saw the post) but the bolts for the hood hinges are up under the dash. Probably the easiest way to get to them would be to drop the dashboard down. I figure you probably got the bolts out by now, but figured I'd tell you anyway. Good luck!
