    Head lights

    Hi all,

My name is Phillip and i am new to the MGB world and i have just bought a 1977 MGB that looks to be in good shape but it does have some problems one being it has sat for 9 yes 9 years. I have removed fuel tank fuel pump fuel lines and in proses of cleaning them. The tank is going to radiator shop for cleaning. The carb was removed and gone through prier to me purchasing. I have the clutch master cylinder off and the slave cylinder off and new ones on order.

So wile i am waiting for parts to come in i am going over the wiring. Well i only have head lights high beams and 4 ways and the starter turns over. Thats all so i am going to start the wiring. One question i have (with more to come) is i don't see a headlight relay or a relay on the car for anything. Were relays used for the headlights, heater fan, wipers or are the switches heavy enough for the current.

Next i will be going through the brakes then new tires and hopefully a test drive.

By in large, relays were NOT used. As I recall, the only relay on you car is the starter relay.

Here's a link that will help you in your troubleshooting http://www.advanceautowire.com/mgb.pdf

Take some advice and get a manual for that car. It will be the best investment that you'll ever make!

Good luck with her, and I'm glad to see another coming out of moth balls!

Yes Phillip, your 77 has a starter relay and an ignition relay, mtd under hood on pass. side.  These relays are interchangeable. They have 4 wire hook-up.  The ignition relay can stop you dead , usually due to bad connections at the relay. Your hd-lite problem sounds like the TURN-DIMMER-HORN switch.
