    Value of 1974 Jaguar XJ12

Hello, all. I'm new to the Jaguar forum as I am normally in the MGB forum. But I am considering the purchase of a 1974 Jaguar XJ12 and would like to get some feedback on whether it is a good buy. This particular car is in unrestored condition with a Chevy 350 V8 powertrain in place of the V12. NADA Classic car price for a V12 of this year is around $5700, and the seller is asking $4000 for this example. The interior is fair with wear mostly on the interior door trim and carpet. The leather seats and wood dash are in very good condition, but there are some trim pieces that need replacement such as interior light covers, etc. On the exterior, the body is pretty good and doesn't seem to be bad at all. There is a slight crease on the right side rear door, but I can live with that. The biggest problem area is the front valance (?) below the front bumper. It is pretty much bashed in and would require replacement if I wanted to make it look good. Other than that, it appears to be pretty solid. I haven't driven it yet, but hope to do so soon. Is the $4000 asking price too steep?

    No

For my money—half that amount is too much!

Funny you should say that, David. In talking with my wife, I suggested that I might offer $2000. If they don't accept that, I'll walk away. I had been driving a 1977 MGB, but about three weeks ago, a 16-year old unlicensed driver in his mommy's Lincoln Town Car drove into my right side. Did $5000.00 worth of damage and ran. Me and the MG chased him down and cornered him and got the insurance information. The MG is pretty bad. She needs a whole new right rear fender and the body is twisted. The insurance company hinted that they may consider it totaled. That's why I'm looking for a car, and I love the old British makes.

Well, from what I've read and heard about the reliability, economy, and maintenance costs involved with caring for the original V12 motor, that Chevy motor may be a good deal, as long as you really don't care about owning that elusive 100-point pristine Jaguar.  If it drives and handles well, and you're having fun, go for it.  Do take it somewhere and get the motor and suspension, brakes, tires, etc, checked by the pros first.
