    MGB Roadster (1970) Clutch

My clutch failed leaving no resistance in the pedal. I topped up the bottle and pumped away for some time and still no resistance but no sign of fluid loss. I then worked the push rod on the slave cylinder by hand a few times and the pedal resistance returned along with a working clutch? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you got lucky and the push-rod just got stuck in the "out" position.

I'd pull the dustcap and clean out any debis in there.

The master cylinder was airbound. When you exercized the slave cylinder you "reverse bled" the system, pushing air and fluid backwards through the system until the air was mostly expelled through the master cylinder, where it escaped to atmosphere. You may still have a bit of air in there, and it would be a good idea to finish the job with a good proper bleed and flush.

    motorbill,

How does an MC get "airbound"? Wouldn't that mean there is a leak somewhere where it's sucking in air?

Same thing just happened to me with my 71 B. I rebuilt the clutch master cylinder last year and all was fine but then this problem arrived. I had ordered a rebuild kit for the slave but didn't install at the time. So now I pull the slave and take it apart and all there is inside is tiny bits of rubber. No piston or spring unless there fused inside. Anyway the kit only has the outside boot and a rubber seal.
