Anyone have experiance with Good Parts 3XZS carb set up?

I'm planning to rebuild a 1976 TR6 engine this spring.  I want to ad a few things while I'm at it.  I'm intriged with the GP 3x ZS system.  I'm going to upgrade the cam and I've already milled the head by a hundred thou. (.1").  Other than that I can't really justify the expense of a super charger and all that since this is basically a daily driver.  I just don't want to be humiliated by another Civic.

Greetings! Feel no shame about Civics beating up on your 30 year old TR-6. 30 years from now NOBODY will be rebuilding and restoring Civics. Smile smugly when they pass you knowing that you are driving a classic British sportscar that is appreciating every day while their Civic only depreciates. Feel only pity for them. Jim

    Hey,

Three carbs. yes! Remember that you can use SUs on that same manifold from Good Parts, and in my opinion you'll have the better performing and better looking setup. I do have a former employee/friend using the triple set on his TR-6. He's using the ZS carburetters and has had some tuning issues, but in general I believe he likes the results. (He'd like it better if he'd used SUs like I told 'im). Shawn, You listening?

I got my ears on Bill. Big Smile

Having shaved .1" off the head should put you at between 9-9.5:1 CR. It's also recommended to deck the block for zero piston/deck clearance for the most useful compression increase. Don't know if its too late for that or not though. With your CR over 9:1 already the supercharger kit is probably not a good idea anyway.

Onto the 3xZS option... I do enjoy my tri carb set up. Part of the 'tuning issues' that Bill was referring to was the needle choice. From what I understand from people that use the triple ZS's at lower altitudes, the stock B1AF needles work well. When you live at 5,000 feet like I do and go up in altitude to play in the canyons, the stock needles didn't work out so well. I also have a Goodparts GP3 camshaft and its nearly too much cam for a street car. It won't idle smoothly below 1,100 rpm and doesn't do much under 2,000rpm but pulls really hard from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm. Which does make it a lot of fun as long as you have some open road in front of you. It's not fun in traffic as I usually have to stay in a lower gear to keep the rpms up. Otherwise the carbs tend to load up. For more of a driver I would recommend the GP2 camshaft. TR6's can be really amazing at 150hp. Mines a bit more than that right now but if you aim for the 150hp mark you won't have to worry about those pesky Civics anymore unless they aren't stock either.Wink

The best carbs for this set up would definitely be SU HIF44's with the integral float bowls. The SU's with the external float bowls could make a really tight fit with all the extra plumbing and linkage. The SU's are a bit more tuneable over the ZS's but ZS's in good shape are just fine for the application as well.

Re: Anyone have experiance with Good Parts 3XZS carb set up?

If you ran 3 webers with that 100 thou shave and deck the block ,,, cam..balance and bore 30 tho over(piston) you will be saying bye bye to those civics.

I had this setup on my TR250. Had a friend with a 1967 Shelby GT 500 Mustang that had a 428 dual 4 barrel setup with auto tranny. At a stop light I would leave him sitting at the stop light smoking his tyres. So we tried a little race at 40mph roll...he got half a car length ahead at the begining...the 250 stayed with him until 90mph where we both shut down for the next light. This is just to give you an idea of what the TR6 engine can do and very streetable every day use.

I used 87 tho shims under the rocker arm post assembly (put a oil hole in one of them) to keep the geometry right with the push rods. It was fairly easy to keep the webers in unisen. I have taken the 250 to 145 mph,,,but pretty scary with a soft top needless to say(had the A type overdrive). The engine would have power all the way up to 6800 rpm or 7000 if not looking....

Note...I only took off 87 thousands off the head. I didn't have any over heating problems using stock radiator. I had some cam grind but don't remember spec's. At idle ..the car would have a little rocking to it from the cam. This is how I could tell if I was out of tune if it didn't have the nice rocking feeling. The most I would do is check point gap and get the unisen gage out and check the air flow intake was even across the webers.

    Cheers and good luck.

PS. Civic's with be seeing the back end of my 74 TR6 shrinking before their eyes. I'm doing lots of mods on it with a stock 2002 LS1 FI all aluminum V8 with a 6 speed tranny(320 to 345hp). I will get 26 to 30 miles per gallon. At 70 MPH the engine will be about 1700 rpm in 6th gear.

If interested to see mods check out BritishV8.org.. go into forums under triumph cars under "Another member saying hi!". Using alot of Gparts in the mods.

I have this setup on my Six. I have been running with them now for almost ten years. After initial setup, I have not had to do anything to them since.
