    Distributor or SU's or both???

My Midget’s 1275 engine is running very lumpy. I bought it as a none runner. The distributor was off but in the boot ready to go on.

Also, the twin Su’s were off and in the boot. I have now refit them and set the static timing. I now have the engine ticking over but very lumpy. I have tried to set the twins up by the Haynes book. However, when I rev the engine it just dies. I have tried the old colour tune as described  but the colour is more white than blue and I cannot get it to change colour.  The compression is ok and the oil pressure is fine.

I am now thinking is it the distributor? I do not know what the condition of that is or if it’s the correct one. I was thinking of buying an electronic 45D. has anyone got any help or advice for me….Tongue Tied dont know why all the other writing is above ?

Re: Distributor or SU's or both???

Great news about the compression and oil pressure...whew!

Here's a few more things to check: the dwell angle, the fuel filter, and the fuel pump.

Is it hitting on all cylinders? Feel the pops of pressure coming out of the exhaust, with your hand. Are there enough? Pull the spark plugs and take a look at them. You may also have a intake manifold or vacuum leak.

Keep hunting, as along as it starts and has good compression and oil pressure, you're well on your way!

    adroit65,

You've posted in the big Healey section. If you have a Midget, you should stick to the Sprite/Midget section. this will help others to diagnose your problem(s).

As far as your electronic ignition question, There are two basic types: optical - a bit more expensive and more involved to install (Flamethrower - I think); Hall-Effect (magnetic), a bit cheaper and very easy to install. (Pertronix)

I installed the cheaper, magnetic type and just love it. Others are willing to go the extra mile feeling that the optical type nets better performance. Either way, you can't go wrong. Your car will perform much better with either of these, and you'll never need to adjust points again!
