    Water drain plug problem

    HI There

I have A 1962 Mk1 With a 1098cc engine in. The engine block water drain plug is stripped. I have a new plug from a spare 850 engine I have but need to repair the thread in the block. Can anyone tell me what size thread the plug is supposed to be. The "New" plug I have has been damaged a little bit, so I am thinking of getting a new one but will need to repair the thread in the block.

    Thanks

    Re: Water drain plug problem

I have a Mk IV and the drain plug is in the cross tube. If I remember correctly, its a 5/16th's 24tpi (fine thread).

I doubt this really helps you since mine is a 1275cc with a different configuration, I just didn't want you to feel alone!

5/16th with a 24tpi is correct for both the blocks!

    Re: Water drain plug problem

Fine eh! Im guessing that most of the stripped thread off the old plug is still in the block. A very carefull [ in terms of alignment]  cleanup job with 5/16 Fine tap needed here? Its not  a tapered plug is it??

    Cheers steve

    Re: Water drain plug problem

Hi Steve it is indeed a tapered thread my friend...oh joy.

most people take them off and drain the system from the bottom hose...why! because the water taps are prone to leaking and breaking as you have found out. 53K2853 is the replacement plug if you decide to do away with the tap! Good luck getting what's left of the old one out, take your time and go easy.
