    Supercharger Advantages

I'm the original owner of a '76 MGB and I'm considering swapping twin HS-4 SU's for a supercharger (the SU's were installed in '82).  I recently restored the car and had the engine (& carbs) completely re-built.  It runs better than ever.  I just drove an SC-equipped B yesterday and am sold on it's performance virtues.

So, except for some of the obvious advantages (power, accel, etc.), I'm curious about fuel economy.  Does the SC provide any meaningful improvement in mileage?  Naturally I understand there may not be much improvement if the right foot is consistently heavy, but if one chooses to drive in a reasonably conservative manner, can I expect to get more MPG?  Or is it more likely that swapping my stock 4-speed for a 5-speed tranny would have a greater impact on fuel mileage?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Stan

    Re: Supercharger Advantages

I haven't even checked mileage since installing my sc but Moss wrote a faq list here: http://www.mossmotors.com/graphics/products/PDF/MGBSCFAQ2.pdf They claim little change. As you discovered it transforms the car. Surely my fuel economy has probably suffered at the hands of my own lead foot. It's a small sacrifice if any for such a power gain.

A five speed would help fuel economy if you often commute on the freeway but it won't put a grin on your face!

    Greg,

Many thanks for your response.  Your experience with a supercharger and the FAQ link you provided was just what I was looking for.  Now, if Moss can just start supplying SC's again, I can get that grin on my face!Cool

    Cheers,
