New Sump - steel or alloy

I am preparing to replace the sump on my late number BJ7. I had holes from scraping the road welded a decade ago (which worked and is still leakless) - I notice that Moss now has steel replacements as well as an alloy sump. Anybody with experience to share on the plus and minus side of each of those options before I put out what would have been my children's inheritance on the sump replacement project?

Also, for any others with BJ7's that were in the transition period as they were preparing for the release of the BJ8 - if you haven't already discovered it - many of your original parts are BJ8 issue. Make sure you match your order to your cars issue numbers.

Am looking forward to words of wisdom from the Healey addicts. JD

    Healy,

As you said, you had holes from scraping the road. Scrape the road a few times with a cast alluminum sump and you'll have much worse. You'll have cracks or breakage, which may or may not be repairable. I think aluminum sumps are really neat, but they belong out of harm's way, like on a high ground clearance saloon or on a show car, or perhaps on a race car, if their protection can be assured. It's a question of economic practicality to me. Enjoy.
