    restoring 1987 body

I have a 1987 body, completely stripped and need advice (as much detail as poss) on removing and replacing the wings, possibly the bit at the bottom of the windscreen as there is some rust on that bit, I wondered if I could just replace the bit that is on the inside of the car.

I need to know how to weld the wing to the bit at the bottom of the windscreen, it looks to me as if it has to be welded from underneeth. and how do I finish off the joint at the top so that it looks good and to stop it rusting.

    Hi

If you haven't a spot welder then simply drill 5mm holes along the edge every 1"1/2 and plug weld it. The wing is just tacked to the scuttle panel in the corners... to finish off either seam sealer or filler but make sure the depression is still there as it's a rain channel.

    Thanks Oz,

I also have to replace the scuttle panels, I have already got one new one (part no:ALA5661), but I can't  work out how to get the old one off.

The new panel has a flang on the edge where it meets the door, does this have to be bent back on it self when fitting, if so what is the best way to do it without distorting the rest of the panel.

    Re: restoring 1987 body

    Hi Joe

ALA5661 is the A panel pal Wink removal is pretty straight forward, use a grinder along the outer edge of the panel until the skin splits, the folded part goes around the inner wing and not the hinge panel as most beleive...lol next grind straight down the seam where the finisher is fitted but take care at the top as you don't want to cut through the scuttle. I usually tease it off with a sharp Cheslie. The fold on the new A panel has to be bent over to re-attatch it to the inner wing, I sand bag it with a nylon malet or you can use a hamer and dolly but that will leave a few marks (depending how good you are) once you get a rough fold which is almost parallel with the A panel outer you can fit it. I then use a door skinning tool to clamp and finish the fold off. A spot weld or two top and bottom to be sure it stay there and your done.

ps don't forget to remove the door! make the job so much easier.

    Good luck Yes

    Re: restoring 1987 body

    Thanks Oz,

I have got the A panels and the wings off now. I have also replaced the LH inner and outer sill and am wondering how to stop them rusting again especialy where I have cleaned off the paint to weld. I am hoping to get the RH sill done this week and then the wind screen surround. I have some problems at the back as well but that could be months away, work and weather may stop play. I will probably come back to you when I get to that windscreen surround, it look like it has to be a butt weld (I could muck that up).

    regards,

    Joe

    Re: restoring 1987 body

    Oz,

I am hoping to fit the wings next, and I believe that they need modifing if I fit bigger wheels, I am not sure what wheels to fit yet, any advice would be welcome on wheel size and mods required.

When I was enqureing about the A panel, you mentioned a door skinning tool, what is that as I have to re skin the doors at some stage.

    regards

    Joe

    Re: restoring 1987 body

    Thanks Oz,

I got the tool and have skined on door, I still want to know what mods are needed to the front wings for bigger wheels (say 6"). Also do I need to do anything to the rear wheel arches.

    Re: restoring 1987 body

Usually you have to cut away at the very front of the wheel arch...I usually go 1" in from the very front and graduate it back to the top (centre) of the arch. there is a template available for fitting sports pack arches if you need one?
