Acid dip BJ8 engine block?

    Acid dip BJ8 engine block?

I've decided to go ahead with a semi-full restoration of my BJ8 and the engine rebuild is underway.  My mechanic would like to acid dip the block to get all the grime and paint off of it- is there a problem with doing that?

    TIA

If what he means by acid dip is the standard "hot tank" of caustic solution then I'd go for it. In fact I wouldn't rebuild an engine without tanking it if I could get new cam bearings. The solution will destroy the cam bearings, so they will have to be replaced. He'll remove all the core plugs and oil gallery plugs so the solution can clean out all the internal passages in the block then replace with new parts. It's as close as you can come to having a new block right out of the foundry. Same goes for the head as well. Removes as much of the coolant and rust residue from the water passages for better cooling and cleans out any sludge from the oil galleries. Only good for cast iron blocks and heads, tends to eat up aluminum parts, but there are special cleaning solutions for those.

Excellent- glad to hear that.  Thanks very much.  I'm pretty sure that's it's a "hot tank"- at least I will be sure before the engine is dipped.
