    Pressure plate rubbing

Has anyone heard of a pressure plate rubbing on the transmisson wall, I recently bought a Sprite MrkIII "66"  (7000 acual miles!)

when I pulled the engine(1098) and trans. I noticed a hole in the case (smoothcase) just above the slave cyl. where the pressure plate had rubbed through. when I seperated the trans from engine is when I noticed it was the pressure plate that was rubbing.

Was this a problem they commonly had or a unique instance? Thanks for any input.

    Re: Pressure plate rubbing

Sounds like you have the larger clutch assembly from a 1275 which will rub inside a smooth case bellhousing or so I've heard. It probalby didn't rub through, but was ground out by the PO to clear. I can't imagine anyone letting a car run with that type of noise coming from the bellhousing area if it was rubbing through.

How can you tell the differance between a 1275 & 1098 clutch assembly?

    Re: Pressure plate rubbing

The disc and pressure plate are larger on the later 1098 and 1275 engines than on the early 948s. The transmission bellhousing was changed to reflect this with the start of the rib case design.
