    Brake Diagnostic Tips
     
    Symptom: Excessive Travel of Brake Pedal
    Problem Possible Cure
    Insufficient brake fluid in reservoir Top up
    Air in hydraulic system Bleed brakes
    Brakes out of adjustment Adjust
    Excessive lining wear Adjust or refit new
    Leaks at pipe unions Locate and rectify
    Leakage past seals in master cylinder, caliper or wheel cylinders Rebuild all cylinders with new seals
    Worn clevis pin on pedal linkage Fit new pin
    Pedal free incorrect Adjust


    Symptom: Grabbing Brakes
    Problem Possible Cure
    Air Bleed brakes
    Warped drums or discs Have machined or replaced
    Tire pressure Correct
    Mismatched tires Correct
    Loose caliper or back plate Tighten
    Rear spring, axle or U-bolts loose Tighten
    Contaminated linings Refit new and find source of leak
    Loose wheel bearings Adjust or fit new
    Sticking wheel cylinder piston Overhaul all wheel cylinders
    Wheel cylinder leaking Overhaul complete system
    Clogged brake pipe Flush system
    Flattened brake pipe Replace


    Symptom: Spongy Pedal Problem
    Problem Possible Cure
    Low fluid in reservoir Top up-check for leak
    Seals in master cylinder worn Rebuild master cylinder
    Defective flexible hoses Renew hoses
    Air Bleed
    Wheel cylinder leaking Overhaul complete system
    Brake pedal slowly sinks to floor with steady pressure Usually master cylinder needs overhaul


    Symptom: Hard Pedal
    Problem Possible Cure
    Seized piston Overhaul hydraulic system
    Oil or brake fluid on linings Replace lining, determine cause of leak
    Binding pedal Seized caliper, a wheel cylinder piston or fulcrum pin
