    Your Triumph Spitfire

What year is it? Any modifications? Running well?

1965 spitfire, running well, only modifications are a set of superlite wheels, a modern gear reduction starter and k&n air filters.

72 Mark IV, 24,000 original miles. Drive it everyday when not raining. Bought it 3 years ago with 11,400 miles. It was parked in an airplane hanger and only driven occasionally in summer months by previous owner. I am the 3rd owner.

    Re: Your Triumph Spitfire

1968 MkIII, BRG, 4-speed, no overdrive, guages in the center of the dash.  It's completely stock except for the radio.  It is running well and is my daily driver.  I love the economy and driving enjoyment.  I wish that Moss supported the older models.  The one thing I would like to get would be some higher gears for the rear end.  Changing to and OD transmission would be too much work and first gear is definitely low enough.

    Re: Your Triumph Spitfire

I have a 1963 Spitfire I've owned since 1973. It's recently gone through a 2.5 year frame-off restoration. I've built the motor up (using a 1296 instead of the 1147) with dual 40DCOE Webers, ported/polished head, larger valves, fast road cam, header, .040 overbore and balanced. I attempted to replicate the SAH Tuning Stage 2 tuning kit offered back in 1963. More can be found at mk1motorsports.com.

Probably a bit of overkill for a Spitfire, but nobody ever said owning/restoring British cars was normal!

How do you like your webers?  I have a MkIII and was considering trading out the single Zenith Stromberg with one or two webers.

    Re: Your Triumph Spitfire

I really like them! They are choked down to 30MM and I have none of the flat spots, stumbles, etc that many people report. The real key is getting the jetting correct. Too often people put too large of chokes in the carbs (I had 34MM originally and had a flat spot) initially and attempt to remedy the problem via jetting. Tough to do.

My engine is a small crank 1296 from a MKIII. Obviously airflow is important if you want the real value of using the Webers. The head is matched ported for the intake and exhaust manifolds. I also have larger valves, fast road cam and a header.

Finally, they also make real neat noises under acceleration! Visit www.mk1motorsports.com and you can see some pictures of thecar and engine in more deetail.

    Re: Your Triumph Spitfire

I'll check it out.  Maybe the wife will by them for my B-Day! ha

I have the 1296 in my MKIII.  If I do, I'll need to learn more about the jetting.

1970 MKIII with gauges on the left. Dual SU's. Yellow.

Was running great until the smoke escaped from the wiring.

I took all the wiring out with the intent of redoing all of it with a 7 circuit racing style fuse panel. I have all new Autometer SportComp gauges and I have made templates to make a new dash.

Finding the time to do all this is another story. I do drive it around the block every now and then just to keep it all lubricated, drop a battery in and run a wire to the coil and use the push button on the starter solenoid, just do stall it ;)

    Re: Your Triumph Spitfire

I bought my 78 last November with 67000 miles and love it. It's my daily driver rain or shine. It has a High compression Dolemite 1500, desmogged, Weber DGV, Lucas point ignition, Sport coil, TR8 mags. I've just refinished the dash and plan to add a header next.

I have a vinyl dash that I would like to replace with wood.  Do you have a template?
