Weak Spark ?? Hard Starting, Slight Miss off idle...

I'm scratching my head here a bit...71 BGT, Strong Engine

Here is what I have done in the last 45 days:

    • Pro Rebuilt Carbs
    • Fully Rebuilt, Recurved Disty by Performance Distributors w/ Pertronix w/ New Cap and Rotor
    • New BPR6ES Plugs gapped at .035
    • Wires are Bosch 7mm Silicone bought in 04, probably have 300 miles on them,
    • Timing set dead on at 10 BTDC (w advance removed, plugged)
    • Carbs sychronized at IDLE and at 3000 RPM using Unison

When I try to start the car, hot or cold, it takes about 10 -15 s of cranking.  When idling, the car will exhibit a slight miss if I gently crack the throttle off idle.

I read in the Pertronix literature...regarding low voltage being a common cause of mis..  JIK I ran a 12 gauge wire straight off the fuse box to the (+) side of the coil.  This seemed to help.  I am considering testing this theory by running a straight 12 gauge wire from the battery to the coil and switching with a relay. I was also told the contact on the rotor button and the cap can be tricky sometimes and I should verify it is moving freely.

It seems somewhere on the ignition side I have corrosion or extra resistance causing poor spark.  Your input is welcomed.

    Hey Bro-

Did the car do this right after installing the carbs? Maybe the gas is too far down the jets so when you crack the throttle you temporarily can't suck the gas up  The floats are set too low? Sounds over-lean. This would also cause hard starting. Does the tach jump around at all?

    Just thoughts- Nothing definite.

Just a diagnostic thought. Reduce the plug gap to .025 and see what happens.

It was doing this before all of the items mentioned  - seems the items listed had no effect.

    Moto - will do .025.

    Ok...

I'm starting to think this is heat and or fuel related.

So - I went out and fired up the B this afternoon.  75 deg ambient, full choke, fired right up on the 2nd crank.

Drove it about 2 miles, turned it off to run into a store, temp was at N.

Came out, takes 5 - 10 s of cranking to fire up.

Driving home - decide to test it out again.  Sitting at a stop light - I kill it.  Wait 1-2 s.  Go to restart - just bump the key and it fires right off.

Does this sound like fuel or spark ?

Re: Weak Spark ?? Hard Starting, Slight Miss off idle...

Could well be fuel percolation. Fuel getting too hot because it is not moving thru the carb. Unless the engine has been warmed up from running it is usually necessary to pull the choke to start even down here in the deep South. When the engine is hot I get faster starts by holding the accelerator down 1/3 to 1/2 while turning the key. Might want to try that. That pertronix install may have retarded your timing as it did mine. I guess the index point of the spark changed from where it was with points. Did you check that?  You would notice a loss of power although the engine might run smoothly enough. Aw shoot ! Try the accelerator position first;  no need to get too involved at this point.
